DVD Review: RONDO

RONDO was written and directed by Drew Barnhard and stars Luke Sorge, Brenna Otts, G.C. Clark,Ketrick “Jazz” Copeland, Michael Vasicek, Meegan Kiefel and Gena Shaw. The music was composed by Ryan Franks and Scott Nickoley.

Paul, a troubled young veteran, is told by a psychiatrist that sex is the solution to his dependency and drinking problems. But things turns out otherwise as Paul and his sister are sucked into a criminal underworld where sex and murder are daily specials and revenge is served piping hot.

Possible spoilers ahead! Paul is a troubled young man who’s crashing at Jill’s place until he can get his act together. She decides to help by sending him to see a therapist who ends up sending him to what appears to be a “private sex party” that turns into a nightmare when Paul witnesses a murder and discovers he’s trapped in a nightmarish predicament. Paul is able to escape and tell Jill what happened and then the mysterious “party hosts” show up and deliver an extreme dose of bloody carnage on poor Paul.

Jill has to watch her own brother get slaughtered from a distance and this is what sets her on a course of vengeance. She comes up with a dangerous plan that will allow her to infiltrate this deadly world of pain and pleasure but it seems these sinister figures are always one step ahead of anyone who enters. Jill gets in over her head when she walks into this dark under world of sex, drugs and death but she gets a lucky break and finds a way to dish out her own violent dose of revenge.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The DVD disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this standard-definition release were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Rondo ended up being a viciously entertaining slice of cinematic pie from Drew Barnhard that’s a hybrid of revenge-thriller and dark comedy all rolled into this wild and crazy neo-noir, pulpy watch that’s destined for cult status. The story has some twists to it and the characters were all interesting and fun to follow – some more than others. This unique movie definitely has a grindhouse and exploitation vibe to it because it doesn’t get any better than watching a beautiful woman in her sexy lingerie spray villains down with a machine gun. Something else that stands out about Rondo is that every single one of the victims in this movie die painfully which means there’s lots of blood plus some cool music to go along with it. Holy hell this was a fun roller coaster ride! Rondo will be available on DVD on June 4th. Go ahead and put this one on your watch list because you are in for a treat!
