DVD Review: Justice League Action: Season 1 – Part 1

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

Justice League Action: Season 1 – Part 1 features the voice talents of Kevin Conroy (Batman), Jason J. Lewis (Superman), Rachel Kimsey (Wonder Woman), Mark Hamill (The Joker, Swamp Thing), Carl Reiner (The Wizard), James Woods (Lex Luthor), Jon Cryer (Felix Faust), Christian Slater (Deadshot), Sean Astin (Shazam), Ken Jeong (Toyman), Diedrich Bader (Booster Gold), Andy Richter (Chronos), Jake T. Austin (Blue Beetle), Mena Suvari (Killer Frost), Lacey Chabert (Zatanna), Jerry O’Connell (The Atom), and Patton Oswalt (Space Cabbie). Casting also includes some clever nods to fanboy favorites of TV and film, like Michael Dorn (Atrocitus), Armin Shimerman (Zilius Zox), Peter Stormare (Mr. Freeze), Noel Fisher (Clarion the Witch Boy), Jasika Nicole (Vixen), Khary Payton (Cyborg), and Robert Picardo (Harvey Dent/Two-Face).

Witness the Justice League like never before in this all-new animated series where the pace is quick, the action is relentless and the fun is non-stop! The “Trinity” of DC’s Justice League– Superman (voiced by Jason J. Lewis), Batman (Kevin Conroy) and Wonder Woman (Rachel Kimsey) – are joined by a galaxy of rotating allies and enemies like John Constantine, Zatanna, Booster Gold, Plastic Man, Lobo, Mr. Freeze, Black Adam and Swamp Thing. The Super Heroes must battle enemies that include space invaders and bizarre forces of magic as they try to defend Earth from Super-Villains intent on destroying the planet. No matter the threat, the Justice League is ready for the challenge.

Justice League Action features stand alone storylines that center around the “Trinity” which includes Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman but so many other DC superheroes get their time to play in this animated series. Heroes like Swamp Thing, Vixen, Firestorm, Jonah Hex and Plastic Man get a lot of screen time in quite a few episodes along with villians like Black Adam, Lobo, the Red Lantern Corp., Solomon Grundy and his horde of zombies who show up for some fun and mischief. Don’t worry because all of your favorite characters also show up. Except for Green Lantern for some strange reason? The storylines are fun enough for all ages to really get into and I really like this animation style for the series. To me, the best thing about Justice League Action is the fact that so many of the “minor league” DC characters finally show up in this animated series and deservingly so.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes series details, more artwork and list of episodes. Each DVD disc also includes some artwork that features two of the heroes on each disc. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this standard-definition disc were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio quality.

Bottom line is, Justice League Action: Season 1 – Part 1 has already become one of my go-to animated series to watch beause the stories are smart, each episode is fast-paced and this incarnation shows more superheroes and supervillians than any of the animated predecessors from DC and WB. Each episode only clocks in at around 11-minutes each and there’s a lot of story and action packed into each one. The series features similar animation to the popular Bruce Timm style with some slight minimalist variations and upgrades. It’s also neat to see just how many actors have been brought in to voice all of these fun characters. It’s really impressive how all of this has come together because even though the episodes are short, it’s kind of the biggest animated series to date.  Justice League Action: Season 1 – Part 1 releases on a 2-disc DVD set on October 10th and is definitely worth checking out.
