DVD Review: Jim Henson’s TURKEY HOLLOW

turkey hollow

Turkey Hollow is based on a story and characters originally conceived by Jim Henson and his longtime writing partner, Jerry Juhl. The movie was directed by Kirk R. Thatcher from a teleplay by Tim Burns and Christopher Baldi and stars Mary Steenburgen, Jay Harrington, Graham Verchere, Genevieve Buechner, Reese Alexander, and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges.

This holiday family film follows Ron Emmerson (Jay Harrington), a recently divorced dad and his two kids, Tim (Graham Verchere) and Annie (Genevieve Buechner) as they travel to celebrate Thanksgiving with their eccentric Aunt Cly (Mary Steenburgen) in the rustic town of Turkey Hollow. Upon their arrival, things are very tense and uncomfortable with the small family as the kids and their aunt discover that Ron had some ulterior motives with the visit, hoping Aunt Cly could tend to his kids while he catches up on some work.

What happens is, the kids decide to explore the mysterious surrounding woods that not only leads them to discover the secret behind the legendary Howling Hoodoo but they stumble upon a few sleazy bad guys who are up to no good. These two bad guys are also the henchmen of Aunt Cly’s scheming neighbor who has been threatening to take her farm. Once all of this is out in the open, the family enlists some surprising new friends to not only help them save the farm but they also save Thanksgiving!

Okay, Turkey Hollow ended up being a fun watch and one that is definitely geared towards a much younger audience. The fact that this story had been simmering in the pot since the late 60’s and finally got made is a fascinating story all its own. The story itself is a heart-warming tale about family and Thanksgiving and with the way the world is going right now it’s also a much needed tale.  The story has a happy ending that includes these magical creatures that are introduced as the magical journey plays out. These crazy looking creatures really do look like they jumped right out of Jim Henson’s mind and onto the screen and they all fit right in with the many creations that the Jim Henson company have unleashed over the years.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details and some images. The DVD disc features matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this standard-definition release were really good.

Bottom line is, Jim Henson’s Turkey Hollow ended up being a fun watch that released just in time for the holiday and the movie itself is all about – family and Thanksgiving. The movie includes some great acting from an impressive cast, along with some amazing looking creatures featuring state-of-the-art puppet effects from the renowned Jim Henson Company.  The DVD released on November 24th and is a movie that the entire family can sit down and watch together. The kiddos will really enjoy it.
