COLD GROUND was written and directed by Fabien Delage and stars Philip Schurer, Doug Rand, Gala Besson, Maura Tillay and Fabrice Pierre.

In 1976 Two journalists leave for the French-Swiss border to investigate a case of cattle mutilations in this new found footage film. It soon becomes clear that the scientific team has gone missing. Escorted by a first-aider, they go looking for the missing team deep into the mountains but their rescue mission soon turns into a fight for survival as they realize they are not alone.

This 2017 survival thriller follows a small group that sets out on foot to search for clues while they investigate this decades old unsolved mystery. It doesn’t take long for their expedition to get extremely dangerous because they’re also battling the frozen elements and the weather keeps getting worse for them. The cold begins to take its toll on the team and to top this off they get lost.

If things couldn’t get any worse for the group it also appears they’re not alone because something or someone is following them. So not only are they battling the freezing weather but it looks like they’re being stalked. Unfortunately for these people their trip into the mountains turns into a deadly fight for survival as they begin to die horrifying deaths one by one and there’s no escape from this nightmare.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The DVD disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this standard-definition (found footage) release were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Cold Ground is one of those indie movies that comes out of nowhere and packs a surprisingly hard punch. I didn’t know much about the movie going into it except that we promoted the DVD release way back and I’d seen the trailer. It’s hard to describe this one without spoiling it so I’ll just call it a survival thriller that turns into a full blown horror show by the end. The story was fresh and the cast did a good job with their characters. Fabien Delage took a stale subgenre in horror and added something fresh to it with the end result being an intense watch. There’s also come impressive cinematography and special makeup effects to compliment his work. There’s lots of blood and gore so the horror hounds should be satisfied with this one. Cold Ground is a found footage thriller that starts out as a slow burn but once it picks up the pace things get crazy cool. Cold Ground is now available on DVD.
