DVD Review: CHRISTMAS BLOOD

CHRISTMAS BLOOD (aka Juleblod) was written and directed by Reinert Kiil and stars Julianne Aga, Pernille Baggeranas, Ida Malene Smith Bakke, Jorgen Langhelle, Marte Saeteren and Solje Bergman.

Christmas is a time of peace, love and family. But not for one Norwegian town as a psychopath dressed in a Santa Claus suit has been terrorizing them for the past 13 years. For as soon as the caroling starts, this demented Kris Kringle dispenses bloody ax blows regardless of whether you’ve been bad or good. As the holiday approaches on one snow-covered town filled with revelers, a pair of detectives work against time to find and arrest this bearded serial killer. Will they manage to stop this demented St. Nick before he kills again?

The beginning of Christmas Blood lets the viewer know about the brutal murders that took place on Christmas Eve 13 years earlier. The movie takes place in present day and follows a group of girlfriends that have reunited to catch up on old times and party it up on Christmas Eve. The girls get a few surprise party crashers during the night but none of them compare to who’s going to show up next. You guessed it, it’s good ol’ St. Nick and he has an axe to grind!

The partying is going great until the deranged serial killer dressed as Santa Claus escapes from prison and makes his way to the small Norwegian village where the girls are partying. Hot on his trail are two detectives that are familiar with his twisted history but it’s a race against time because the psychopath has a thirst for blood and he has a head start on the men trying to stop him. Upon arrival to the small village, Santa begins his reign of terror once again and the body count slowly rises as he kills of this small group of friends one by one. Sure, the detectives catch up to the twisted menace but their no match for this terrifying version of Santa Claus.

The front of the packaing features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and specs. The DVD disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this standard-definition release were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, even though Christmas Blood is your typical holiday slasher that features a killer with no motive, it’s still a fun watch that’s full of blood and gore courtesy of this creepy looking Santa. The movie has a little bit of everything you want in a slasher – things like pretty girls partying, a serial killer that’s dressed to kill and the hero who’s trying to stop the madman. It takes a little while for things to get good so the first half has a bit of slow burn to it but the blood is flowing like a stream in the second half. Speaking of blood, there are some pretty gnarly kills courtesy of the Saint Nick killer. All of the special effects look really good plus there’s some impressive cinematography in the movie which helps with its atmospheric vibe going on. Christmas Blood isn’t an instant classic but I do think Reinert Kiil has delivered a violent holiday slasher that’s brutally twisted and sickening fun. Christmas Blood is now available on DVD.
