DVD Review: BIRDS OF PARADISE

birds of paradise

BIRDS OF PARADISE features the voices talents of Drake BellAshley TisdaleKen JeongJane LynchJon Lovitz, Dallas Lovato and Keith David. “Meet the Flockers.”

The movie follows Jack the sparrow (Bell) who feels sort of ordinary and wishes he could be more exotic and vibrant like so many of his friends. What happens is, he accidentally goes through a colorful paint change that ends up getting him in a little trouble with some of the other birds, simply an issue of mistaken identity. Jack ends up meeting Aurora (Tisdale), a beautiful yellow canary that has been locked up her whole life until she escapes. She has some trouble readjusting to this new freedom but when Jack comes into the picture, the two hit it off and rely on each other to help with their own shortcomings and lack of self esteem.

Jack and Aurora meet up with some new friends, a Motley Crue of feathered misfits that include Larry the pigeon (Jeong), Pete the humming bird (Lovitz), Claire the bat (Lynch) and the old Buzzard (David). They all go on this wild adventure and learn the true meaning of friendship along the way as well as overcoming their own personal fears. And with Jack and Aurora, these two learn that it’s not who you are on the outside, but who you are on the inside that matters.

Okay, as cheesy as this story and the characters were, it was a fun watch and geared towards a much younger audience. Kids will enjoy this movie for a number of reasons and may even learn a little something about friendship and caring for someone else who might have a hard time fitting in. The most annoying thing about the movie was when Ashley Tisdale would scream because it almost sounded like a screeching noise, like nails on a chalkboard. The animation isn’t  the best and it’s pretty simple and basic but I think that’s how it’s all supposed to look.

This DVD comes with a slip cover featuring the artwork you see up top. The back includes movie details, a few images and list of extras.

Bottom line is, if you’re looking for an alternate to Rio 2 when it opensthen Birds of Paradise will make a fine substitute. The Birds of Paradise DVD will be available exclusively at Walmart and Redbox on April 1st. The movie has been awarded the DOVE Seal of Approval and will make a great watch for the enter family but especially the much younger audience.
