DVD Review: BIG GAME

big game

BIG GAME was written and directed by Jalmari Helander and stars Samuel L. Jackson, Onni Tommila, Ray Stevenson, Victor Garber, Felicity Huffman,Ted Levine and Jim Broadbent.

In the rugged countryside of Finland, a young thirteen-year-old (Onni Tommila) embarks on a traditional quest to prove himself by spending 24 hours alone in the wild, armed with only a bow and arrow. After witnessing a spectacular crash, he discovers the escape pod from Air Force One, containing the President of the United States (Samuel L. Jackson). When they realize a group of kidnappers is hot on their trail with the intention of taking the president, this unlikely duo must escape their hunters as they search for the American Special Forces team sent out to find them.

Okay, this movie ended up being so much more fun than I expected it to be. We watch the President of the United States of America (Samuel L. Jackson) get betrayed by some of his own people where he ends up crashing in the wilderness of Finland. This is where he meets Oskari (Onni Tommila) who rescues him from his escape pod that jettisoned from Air Force One. The two of them hit it off and quickly learn that there’s some bad guys after them, actually the President who is being hunted down by a mad man and his goon squad. The two new friends set out on a wild adventure of survival where they not only match wits with their enemy but eventually outsmart, defeat and even get a little sweet revenge against them.

Big Game 1

The story for Big Game was a lot of fun, very original and really interesting. It was almost like I was watching a Disney-like family adventure with the way it was shot and young Onni Tommila stealing the show. Jalmari Helander captured plenty of magic with his camera where the location and scenery looked really breathtaking at times. The cast assembled for this action adventure was absolutely amazing, the characters were all interesting, and all of the acting was really good. This movie also included some really exciting action scenes, explosions and stunts full of thrills and chills. All of this was very well done and it all looked great on screen.

The packaging comes with a slipcover. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details and some images. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this standard-definition release were both really good.

Bottom line is, Big Game ended up being a really fun watch that was full of exciting action, thrills, suspense and of course Samuel L. Jackson kicking some bad guy ass. I can’t leave out Onni Tommila because this young man gave the movie a little something special and he also kicked some bad guy ass. Big Game releases on DVD on August 25th and if you’re looking for something fun and exciting to watch with the entire family be sure you check this one out. It’s a small little action movie that plays really big!
