DVD Review: AMERICAN MARY

american mary dvd

AMERICAN MARY is the story of a medical student named Mary who is growing increasingly broke and disenchanted with medical school and the established doctors she once idolized. The allure of easy money sends a desperate Mary through the messy world of underground surgeries which leaves more marks on her than the so-called freakish clientele. Appearances are everything.

American Mary is directed by Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska aka The Twisted Twins who brought us the super fun Dead Hooker in a Trunk a few years back. The Twins’ second film stars Katharine Isabelle, Antonio Cupo, Tristan Risk, David Lovgren, Paula Lindberg and Twan Holliday.

The movie centers around Mary who is a promising med student practicing to be a surgeon. We learn in the beginning that she is dealing with some financial problems which really is nothing uncommon for most college students. What happens is, Mary gets introduced to the underground world of body modification and it ends up paying really well. This new introduction into Mary’s pretty simply and innocent life leads her into a dark place where she never really returns from. She kind of turns into this beautiful modern day Frankenstein.

Mary’s semi-normal college life gets turned upside and to the point where she even quits school, for a couple of intense reasons, so she begins her own practice and becomes the go-to-person because of her talents. She gets a number of patients where she performs certain body modifications but there are two that stand out among the rest, one being an unwilling patient who wronged Mary early in the movie that you just have to see to believe and the other is a cameo by the Soskas who get a little work done for themselves, that’s all I’ll say. No big spoilers here!

There’s one particular patient that Mary has who had a couple of really weird requests and Mary obliged which ultimately becomes her worst nightmare late in the movie. Simply put, she gets paid a visit by someone that is really upset by the work she performed on this certain patient early on and it becomes something of a tragic and bloody symphony at the end. The way this tragic movie ends is really almost fairytale like, a really dark fairytale.

The movie does contain plenty of blood, some gore and a few body parts here and there with lots of imagination but it’s not like I was watching a slasher flick or anything like that, this is much more tame but the horror fans still get the red stuff. There is also this one patient of Mary’s, the one she performs a number of revenge body mod surgeries on that stands out  big time, you’ll just have to see this to believe it!

All in all I think Jen and Sylvia Soska have solidified themselves as serious directors and storytellers with American Mary. Katharine Isabelle played Mary to perfection and made this tragic character something really special. All of the acting was great, the special effects were fantastic and the score was just so fitting. Even the end credits were rocking solid!

Bottom line is, American Mary is a fantastic movie! Jen and Sylvia Soska have taken a huge step forward with their sophomore effort that is easily an instant cult classic in the world of horror. This DVD releases on June 18th and is definitely worth picking up!
