Blu-ray Review: THE TOYBOX

THE TOYBOX was directed and edited by Tom Nagel and stars Denise Richards, Mischa Barton, Matt Mercer, Jeff Denton (who also wrote the screenplay), Brian Nagel, Greg Violand, Malika Michelle, David H. Greathouse and Katie Keene.

Jennifer (Denise Richards) and her family go on a summer road trip in a used RV with her husband’s estranged father and brother. Along the way, they find Samantha (Mischa Barton) and her brother, broken down on the side of the highway. After driving into the middle of nowhere, the RV takes on a mind of its own, crashing and stranding them in the scorching and isolated desert. Little by little, the unsuspecting group of travelers is blindsided by the terrible secrets within the walls of the RV and find themselves fighting to survive.

THE TOYBOX follows Jennifer and her troubled family who takes a road trip in this RV to hopefully repair a damaged relationship between this father and his two sons. Along the way they pick up Samantha and her brother, whose car broke down on the side of the road. What happens is, they end up out in the middle of nowhere and the RV decides to break down and this is when things start to get dark for its occupants.

What they discover is that this mysterious RV is actually a haunted killing machine that starts taking them out one by one. As the body count rises, the sinister supernatural force finally reveals itself as the travelers try to survive and escape this nightmarish vehicular slaughterfest from hell. In the end, the terrifying secrets are ultimately revealed about this haunted RV and unfortunately for anyone who enters – there’s no escaping from THE TOYBOX.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The Blu-ray disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, THE TOYBOX was an okay watch but honestly it wasn’t really anything special mostly because of the mediocre story. Over the years we’ve gotten plenty of movies about haunted houses, haunted amusements parks/attractions, haunted dolls/objects, and even haunted cars, so why not a haunted RV? It’s time! What the movie offers is an isolated location that’s just right for a haunted slaughterfest like this, a great cast and a handful of kills that include a nice amount of blood and gore. Unfortunately, most of the characters weren’t too interesting except for Mischa Barton who delivered an emotional performance as the co-female lead and David Greathouse who played the ghostly serial killer that we don’t get enough of. Still, the directing was good and there was some nice cinematography to go along with it. THE TOYBOX will be available on Blu-ray on September 18th and is good enough for a one time watch, especially with Halloween right around the corner.
