Movie Review: THE SURVIVALIST (Blu-ray Combo Pack)

THE SURVIVALIST was written and directed by Stephen Fingleton and stars Martin McCann, Mia Goth and Olwen Fouéré.

In a post-apocalyptic future ravaged by overpopulation, a lone survivor (Martin McCann) mercilessly protects his remote sliver of property from intruders. When a mother (Olwen Fouéré) and daughter (Mia Goth) in search of food and shelter show up at his doorstep, he’s suspicious, but cautiously allows them in.Soon, an uneasy alliance, borne of necessity, forms between the trio – but distrust and paranoia threaten to give way to violence at any moment. The Survivalist, the intense, heart-pounding debut feature from Stephen Fingleton, viscerally evokes the fear, tension, and all-consuming desperation of life in a kill-or-be-killed dystopia.

The movie follows this loner who lives on a plot of land out in the middle of nowhere. He’s a reclusive survivor who lives off the secluded land. He’s also an untrusting man who lives by a strict code and has been alone for some time but all of a sudden a mother and her daugther show up where he reluctantly ends up playing host to them. The two guests quickly show him that they both make useful hands and he even hits it off romantically with the daughter. The thing is, the mother and daughter have an ulterior motive but it gets shut down when the trio have some violent uninvited guests and it all ends up getting deadly. It’s a fight for survival and the winner ultimately takes all.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, an image and list of sepcial features. The reverse sleeve features an image from the movie. Each disc also features some artwork that matches the front cover. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, The Survivalist was an intense and gritty apocalyptic thriller that shows how far people will go when they’re desperate and pushed to the limit. Stephen Fingleton did a really good job for this to be his directorial debut and this small cast all delivered some impressive performances. The isolated location played an important part to the story where all of this takes place. It really did feel like I was zapped into this dangerous world where the people would do anything to anyone so that they might get ahead some. Simply put, other people wanted what this one man had so he had to fight them off anyway possible in orfer to keep it all. There were some who wanted his cabin for shelter while others wanted to steal from his garden so they could eat. All in all this was a wll made survival thriller that teases a grim dystopian future. It’s also a movie for more of a mature audience so keep the kiddos away from this one.  The Survivalist releases on Blu-ray+DVD Combo Pack on October 3rd and is worth a watch.
