Blu-ray Review: THE ONES BELOW

THE ONES BELOW was written and directed by David Farr and stars Clémence Poésy, Stephen Campbell Moore, David Morrissey and Laura Birn.

Kate (Clemence Poesy) and Justin (Stephen Campbell Moore) are an affluent couple in a tony London suburb awaiting not just the arrival of their first-born, but also the new tenants who will rent the apartment downstairs following the death of its previous inhabitant. When Jon (David Morrissey) and Teresa (Laura Birn) move in – he a self-assured businessman, she a self-possessed professional – Kate and Justin set out to befriend their neighbours.
Things get off to a good start: the overgrown back garden is restored to its immaculate former glory, and, lo and behold, the new couple is also expecting a child. They seem to have lots in common, but things take a strange turn at their first dinner party, and yet another with the birth of Kate and Justin’s baby boy. These twists, and many others, provide the dramatic underpinnings on which Farr can turn the screws on his four main characters.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The Blu-ray disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, The Ones Below ended up being a really dark and thought-provoking character study. The story was smart and the four main characters were all very interesting and they each offered up little something different to the story. Everything pretty much centers around Kate whose paranoia sets in and this keeps the viewer in complete suspense because you don’t know if she is simply losing it or are the new neighbors as sinister as she thinks they are. The signs are evident that something isn’t quite right with the neighbors so I’ll just leave it at that. Oh and there’s a big case of OCD going on! By the end, the story has twisted itself into this uncomfortable psycho-drama that delivers a shocker of a finale. First time director David Farr was able to capture all of these uncomfortable and tension-filled moments that made this slow burn an entertaining watch. The small cast also put on some amazing performances. The Ones Below is an eerie thriller that would make Polanski and Hitchcock proud. This Blu-ray releases on September 6th and is worth a watch.
