Blu-ray Review: THE LINGERING

THE LINGERING was helmed by first time feature Directors Ho Pong Mak and Derrick Taoby and stars Athena Chu, Louis Cheung, Bob Chang, Terry Zou, Lee Fung, Wei Lai and Yao Tong

Dawa and his mother spend a terrifying night alone in the basement after being tormented by a strange and dangerous presence. Years after his mom’s death, Dawa is forced to return, again facing the presence that once tortured him as a child.

The story for this haunted house thriller centers around this young boy and his mother who are waiting on his father to return home from work. What happens is, his mother finds out that there was an accident where he works but she can’t get any kind of confirmation if her husband was one of the people killed in the tragedy.

The thing is, even though the boy’s father never returned hom from work, something did and it latches onto their home and terrifies the boy and his mother. The boy eventually grows up and has to leave for work and when he finally returns home to see his mother he finds a broken old lady who’s lost everything but still waiting on her husband to return home.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The Blu-ray disc also features some similar artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, The Lingering ended up being another chilling entry in the subgenre of Asian horror and it’s the right time of year to release a movie like this since Halloween is right around the corner. The Lingering is kind of in the same vein as The Grudge but it doesn’t get as dark and twisted in this atmospheric yarn. There’s some decent looking visual effects but the viewer doesn’t have to worry about blood and gore because the movie doesn’t depend on that for its scares. The heartbreaking story about this boy, his mother and the father who never returned home from work is what drives this ghost story. The creepy thing is, something came home in his place. Even when the son moves away from his mother for work and returns years later to find out she’s lost everything but still waiting on his father to return was a touching way to end things. The cast did a good job with their characters and I thought the first time directors delivered a haunted house thriller about family. The Lingering will be available on Blu-ray on October 15th.
