Blu-ray Review: THE DEAD DON’T DIE

THE DEAD DON’T DIE was written and directed by indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and features a powerhouse of an ensemble cast including Bill Murray, Adam Driver and Chloë Sevigny, Tilda Swinton, Danny Glover, Caleb Landry Jones, Rosie Perez, Iggy Pop, Sara Driver, RZA, Selena Gomez, Carol Kane, Austin Butler, Luka Sabbat and Tom Waits.

In the sleepy small town of Centerville, something is not quite right. The moon hangs large and low in the sky, the hours of daylight are becoming unpredictable and animals are beginning to exhibit unusual behavior. No one foresees the strangest and most dangerous repercussion that will soon start plaguing the town: THE DEAD DON’T DIE – they rise from their graves and savagely attack and feast on the living – and the citizens must battle for their survival.

The story centers around Chief Cliff Robertson (Bill Murray) and Officer Ronnie Peterson (Adam Driver) who witness some stranger things at the beginning of the movie. Things that can’t be explained like the time has stopped or slowed down, anything electrical isn’t working properly and the animals and insects are going crazy. What the police officers discover is that polar fracking has thrown the Earth off its axis and it’s turning things upside down – literally.

There’s a number of locals who also witness these mysterious events going down but there’s nothing stranger than when the dead begin to crawl out of their graves. These zombies start to terrorize the small town and nobody is safe from this shocking end of days event – even Cliff and Ronnie. The dead have returned as the undead and they’re hungry! Watching it all go down from a safe distance (hidden in the woods) is Hermit Bob (Tom Waits) who may end up being the only survivor of the zombie apocalypse.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The Blu-ray disc is chrome and features the movie logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, The Dead Don’t Die ended up being something a little new and different in the oversaturated zombie sub-genre. The story deals with another zombie apocalypse so there’s nothing really original here but this one gives reasons behind it that include polar fracking (which I completely disagree with) and it shows how all living creatures are affected by this. Simply put, animals, insects and birds go crazy and the dead are resurrected as the undead. These are old school looking zombies but with a twist – some of them can actually speak a few words. As far as the special effects go, I thought the makeup looked good plus there’s a lot of decapitions to go along with that. The Dead Don’t Die isn’t a great movie but it is an entertaining and interesting watch simply because it really does feature the greatest ensemble cast ever disassembled in a zombie movie and it is a little different. This is a grim look at the zombie apocalypse that shows no hope for any living creature (except maybe one) but it does include some dark dry humor throughout the watch. The Dead Don’t Die will be available on a Blu-ray Combo Pack (plus DVD and Digital) on September 10th.
