Blu-ray Review: Supernatural: The Complete Fourteenth Season

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

Supernatural has spawned several novels, magazines, comics, games and an anime series and stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles as Sam and Dean Winchester, with Misha Collins as Castiel, Mark Pellegrino as Lucifer and Alexander Calvert as his son, Jack.Created by Eric Kripke, the fourteenth season of the hit series was executive produced by Robert Singer, Andrew Dabb, Phil Sgriccia and Brad Buckner & Eugenie Ross-Leming. Produced by Kripke Enterprises, Inc. in association with Warner Bros. Television, Supernatural returns for its fifteenth and final season this fall on The CW.

The Winchester brothers’ harrowing journey into the heart of darkness continues as Supernatural enters Season Fourteen. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) have matched wits with monsters, demons, Heaven and Hell. But last season, the Winchesters and Castiel (Misha Collins) stumbled upon a terrifying alternative universe: an apocalyptic world where they were never born, all while training Jack (Alexander Calvert), the son of Lucifer, and trying to save their mother, Mary Winchester. The final battle with Lucifer and the Archangel Michael altered the Winchesters’ lives forever…and created an even greater threat for Sam and Dean. The boys are back and willing to risk everything for their loved ones in all twenty thrilling new adventures, including a historic 300th episode, with a Winchester family reunion never to be forgotten.

The beginniing of season fourteeen reveals that Dean is still possessed by the archangel Michael but it doesn’t take long before Michael leaves Sam behind and flies off with other plans but it’s not the last time the older Winchester brother has to fight for his life against the powerful archangel. Sam and Dean are reunited and they’re trying to find a way to help Jack with his life-threatening problems and as the season plays out things only get worse for them. Castiel is also around and he’s useful, like aways, whenever he’s needed. Even God makes a rare appearance close to the end of the season. Besides this, the team is also fighting off the latest monstrous threats that arrive.

There’s also Nick who survives after Lucifer dies but even though he’s free from the stranglehold that the Prince of Darkness has over him all these years it doesn’t mean Nick isn’t up to no good – because he is! Sam, Dean and Mary get to have a happy but short-lived family reunion with John Winchester who finally makes his return. There’s time travel and alternate realities going here, that’s how all of this happens. At the center of everything happening this season is Jack who tries so hard to fit in and it always seems to backfire on him. Even when his life seems to be saved, this event ends up backfiring and it causes some uneasiness between Sam and Dean and Castiel and Jack. What happens here also sets up what’s going down in the fifteenth and final season of Supernatural.

The packaging comes with a nice slipcase – the same kind all of the other home video release like this from WBHE come in. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes season twelve details, some images and list of special features. There’s also an insert inside that includes a list of the episodes with synopsis, original airdates, more images, and series credits. All three of the Blu-ray discs also include artwork that features Sam and Dean Winchester. Inserting each disc, the menu screens were simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Supernatural continues to be one of my favorite series of all time and this season was actually much better than the previous few and there’s several reasons for that. The return of Jeffrey Dean Morgan for the 300th episode was epic and it’s the first and only time he’s returned to Supernatural since the first couple of seasons. Except for that time we heard his voice back in 2008. Remember that? This family reunion was a long time coming for diehard Supernatural fans that had been asking for it and they didn’t disappoint. The other big reason is the series is getting ready to wrap things up and we saw the beginning of the end this season. The writing this season picked things up some since the series is slowly coming to a close so everything is being set up for what’s hopefully an epic finale next season. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles continue to be the heart and soul of the series but they get lots of help by the co-stars, like Misha Collins, as well as special appearances by many familiar faces we’ve gotten to know over the years. All in all, I really enjoyed this season of Supernatural and look forward to seeing how they wrap things up in season fifteen.Supernatural: The Complete Fourteenth Season will be available on a 3-disc Blu-ray set (plus Digital) on September 10th.
