Blu-ray Review: Supergirl: The Complete Third Season

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist, Mehcad Brooks, Chyler LeighJeremy Jordan, Katie McGrath, and Odette Annable, with Chris Wood and David Harewood.  Based on the characters from DC by special arrangement with the Jerry Siegel family, Supergirl is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller.

In Season Three, Kara Danvers grapples with the sacrifices she’s made personally while saving National City as Supergirl.  She even considers covering up her human identity altogether. Being human and vulnerable is hard. Maybe she’s better off embracing her alien DNA and only being the “Girl of Steel.” As Kara struggles with her path forward, she continues to work with Hank Henshaw and her sister, Alex, at the Department of Extranormal Operations to battle all threats to National City, including new villains Morgan Edge, and the “Worldkiller,” known as Reign.  Everything Kara’s ever known and everyone she’s ever loved will be tested.

The season starts off with Kara (Melissa Benoist) still dealing with the loss of Mon-El (Chris Wood) and she seems a lot different (maybe darker) while this is going on. Good thing is, Mon-El returns and he brings two new friends with him. There’s Imra Ardeen aka Saturn Girl (Amy Jackson) and Querl Dox aka Brainiac 5 (Jesse Rath) and the three of them are a part of the Legion of Superheroes. I liked the introduction of Brainiac 5 and I think we’ll see more from him next season. There’s also a few relationship twists that go along with Mon-El’s return and Kara has a tough time dealing with it at first. This season also puts the spotlight on Samantha Arias (Odette Annable) and her daughter Ruby (Emma Tremblay) and these two become an important part of what’s happening in the third season, especially Samantha.

Kara gets to have a brief family reunion with her Kryptonian mother Alura Zor-El (Erica Durance) and J’onn (David Harewood) also has an emotional reunion with his father M’yrnn J’onzz (Carl Lumbly) who is dealing with some aging health problems. The main villian this season is Reign aka the Worldkiller but there’s a big twist that comes with this new opponant so Kara and her friends have to deal with this complicated figure very carefully. This is where Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) comes into help because she actually has the technology to figure out how to stop Reign without hurting some other innocent people in the process. Some sparks fly between Lena and James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) this season plus James ends up revealing himself to the world as Guardian. At the end of the season, they’re able to stop the Worldkiller before she powers up to full destructive strength but this ultimately creates another dark figure that emerges in the cliffhanger.

The packaging comes with a slipcase – the same kind all of the other home video release like this from WBHE come in. The front features the artwork you see up at the top of the page that includes the titular character/hero and the back includes season three details, some images, and list of special features. There’s also an insert inside that includes a list of the episodes with synopsis, original airdates, more images, and series credits. All four of the Blu-ray discs have a blue finish and feature the House of El crest aka Supergirl’s logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Supergirl: The Complete Third Season ended up being another step in the wrong direction for this series that started out so strong. The writing for Supergirl keeps getting worse because they drag in hot topics and social issues from real world news and they twist the headlines. All I’m looking for is an escape from reality! It’s almost like they’re trying to brainwash today’s youth, oh wait, maybe they are! What this does is alienate a lot of fans who end up turning away from Hollywood’s one-world view because it’s too shallow minded and selfish to realize that not everybody thinks like it does. All I want in a superhero series are heroes and villian with lots of action and special effects. Unfortunately, what Supergirl has turned into is Melrose Place with lots of wine drinking and capes and that’s too bad because I really do like most of these characters and the special effects are very impressive. Melissa Benoist makes a wonderful Supergirl and David Harewood portrays Martian Manhunter to perfection and this guy is one of my favorite characters on the small screen. Hopefully the producers will ease up on their propaganda and get back to formula with this series that has so much potential. Hey, at least half the season was an entertaining watch. Supergirl: The Complete Third Season is now available on a 4-disc Blu-ray set (plus Digital).
