preacher us

PREACHER is based on the popular 1990s graphic novels by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, published by Vertigo, an imprint of DC Comics.  The darkly comedic, hard-hitting, supernatural thrill-ride follows Texas preacher Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) who, after a supernatural event at his church, is thrust into a crazy world populated by a cast of characters from Heaven, Hell and everywhere in between. Along with his hell-raising ex-girlfriend, Tulip (Ruth Negga), and Irish vampire Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), Jesse embarks on a wild, dark journey of discovery and revenge unlike any other.

The series also stars Lucy Griffiths as Emily, W. Earl Brown as Sheriff Hugo Root, Derek Wilson as Donnie, Ian Colletti as Arseface, Tom Brooke as Fiore, Anatol Yusef as DeBlanc, Graham McTavish as The Cowboy and Jackie Earle Haley as Odin Quincannon. Produced by Sony Pictures Television, It was developed for television by Sam Catlin, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg, who also serve as executive producers along with James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Ori Marmur, Vivian Cannon, Ken F. Levin and Jason Netter.

First of all, I instantly fell in love with this series that tells the edgy story of Jesse Custer who is this preacher with a mysterious past who also ends up being the host of a supernatural entity, so he’s got like two different kinds of mystery/drama going on here plus he’s packing a whole lot of power. He’s a bad man with a haunted past who is simply trying to do some good! There’s also the Irish junkie vampire Cassidy who becomes Jesse’s bestfriend and comic relief at times. This guy can take a lot of pain and punishment just to prove a point! There’s also Tulip who is this really cute badass who can dish out as much pain and abuse as any grown man can. She also still loves Jesse and even has a special bond with Cassidy. The first season offers up some flashbacks that help reveal some of the mystery about the characters and why everything is like it is. These three characters are the anchor that holds down the cursed little town of Annville, Texas and its small population. Together, they fight the evil that surrounds Annville.

I didn’t know how Sam Catlin, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg would do bringing this graphic novel to life on the small screen but they have really delivered something special. I’m not really familiar with the comic book but the series itself turned out freaking awesome! The series has two modes going on because as dark as it can get at times, there’s also lots of fun humor to balance it all out. Preacher is definitley character and story driven but it does feature some impressive special effects/makeup effects at times and lots of blood and gore. Oh yeah, and if you like violence then you’re going to be a happy camper because Preacher has plenty of action! The small and isolated location that serves the part of Annville plays an important part with the story telling. It’s a dirty and gritty little town that also has a haunted past just like Jesse, or in this case let’s call it a curse!

The packaging features the artwork you see up top and the back includes series details, an image of the cast and list of special features. The reverse sleeve features an image and the episode listing + extras included on each of the three discs. Each disc has its own individual artwork featuring the three main characters – Jesse, Cassidy and Tulip. Inserting each disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Preacher has ended up being one of my new favorite series that is just so addicting and mezmorizing, plus it’s one of the craziest things on television. I’m not familiar with the comics so I can’t really say how close they stay to the source material but the series itself is wicked good fun and entertaining to the max. I instantly fell in love with these flawed characters as they not only battle against the evil surrounding them, but their inner demons as well. The writing for this series is top notch and all of the acting is very well done. Maybe there’s a stretch on the Southern accents but it’s easily forgiven. It’s all part of the charm and humor that this strange little series possesses. Honestly, I can’t get enough of Jesse, Tulip, Cassidy and this cursed little town they live in and I’m already looking forward to the second season. Preacher: Season One is now available on a 3-disc Blu-ray set and comes highly recommended. If you haven’t witnessed Preacher yet then you are in for a fun-filled treat!
