Blu-ray Review: PLEASE STAND BY

PLEASE STAND BY was directed by Ben Lewin from a screenplay by Michael Golamco and stars Dakota Fanning, Toni ColletteAlice Eve, River Alexander, and Tony Revolori, with Marla Gibbs and Patton Oswalt.

The world is a confusing place for Wendy (Fanning). As a fiercely independent and brilliant young woman with autism, Wendy longs to leave the regimen of her group home and return to life with her sister’s family and their new baby, but she must first prove herself. As a lover of all-things-Star Trek, Wendy writes fantasy stories in her free time. To her, people are an indecipherable code, so she uses her Star Trek filter to understand them. When a screenplay competition presents itself, Wendy decides to finish her 500-page Star Trek script and enter. Now, the problem is getting it there. In order to meet the deadline, Wendy must travel hundreds of miles outside her protected boundaries to submit her script in person.

With her little dog Pete in her purse and a few dollars in her pocket, Wendy boldly goes where she has never gone before. And with her no-nonsense therapist (Collette) and big sister Audrey (Eve) following close behind, Wendy, with the help of some colorful friends she meets along the way, must learn how to follow her dream and find her place in a world she hopes will accept her …. Just like everyone else.

Please Stand By follows Wendy, a young autistic woman who ends up running away so that she can submit her manuscript to a Star Trek writing competition. The avid Star Trek fan has never ventured out too far away because of her disability but her desire to submit her manuscript drives her to boldly go where she’s never gone before – way outside of her comfort zone. She leaves her caregiver and sister in a state of panic when they discover that she’s gone, so they quickly start searching for her where they realize where she’s headed. Wendy ends up meeting several people during her journey (some good and some bad) but she does ultimately reach her destination and is able to submit her manuscript to Paramount Pictures. Of course, her caregiver and sister do finally catch up with her and get Wendy back home safely. Wendy ends up proving to the ones who care about her that she’s able to handle so much more than what they thought she could and this adventure ultimately brings her much closer to her sister.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Please Stand By ended up being a light-hearted dramedy that Star Trek fans everywhere will hopefully enjoy as much as I did and it’s a watch that families that have dealt with autism will be able to relate to. I really liked the story and how the popular sci-fi franchise was incorporated into it. All of the heartfelt performances were really strong and Dakota Fanning delivered an outstanding performance as this likable young woman dealing with autism. Director Ben Lewin captures the drama and comedy just right to give this movie an entertaining viewing experience without it ever getting offensive because of its serious subject matter that so many people have to deal with. This is a really fun movie with a great message that the entire family can sit down and watch together. Please Stand By will be available on Blu-ray on May 1st.
