Blu-ray Review: ONCE UPON A TIME

ONCE UPON A TIME is based on the best-selling fantasy novel “Three Lives Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms” by Tang Qi. The movie was helmed by first-time feature film directors Zhao Xiaoding and Anthony LaMolinara and stars Liu Yifei, Yang, Yikuan Yan, Jin Luo and Chun Li.

Once Upon a Time is a story of epic battles, deep passion, and the powerful forces that drive mortals and gods alike toward revenge, loyalty, and eternal love. This visually spectacular fantasy adventure follows an immortal woman who reconnects with a love from her past life. Bai Qian, a goddess and monarch from the Heavenly Realms, is sent to the mortal world to undergo a trial to become a High Goddess. There, she meets Ye Hua, with whom she falls in love and marries. When an old enemy reappears in her life, everything she holds dear is threatened.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Once Upon a Time was an entertaining movie full of interesting characters, amazing creatures and exciting action. There’s some impressive CGI and well-choreographed stunts used to create so many scenes in the movie. The complex story spanned thousands of years and focused on this man and woman who fell in love, then lost each other, only to find love again later on in life. This amazing world is inhabited by mortals and immortals as well as gods and monsters but at the center of it all is good versus evil and how love conquers all. The only problem in the movie is that it jumps around quite a bit, so if you turn away for too long you might get lost. This is really the only gripe I have about it because there’s just so much going on, otherwise it’s close to being an epic cinematic experience. The visually stunning Chinese fantasy drama will make its Blu-ray debut in the U.S. on May 1st.
