Blu-ray Review: OFFICER DOWNE

OFFICER DOWN is based on Joe Casey and Chris Burnham’s popular comic book about a crime fighting LAPD cop who is brought back to life after every death. The movie was directed by M. Shawn Crahan, a.k.a. ‘Clown’ co-founder of metal band Slipknot and stars Kim Coates, Tyler Ross, Lauren Luna Velez, Meadow Williams, Alison Lohman, Sona Eyambe and Corey Taylor.

Adapted from the 2010 graphic novel, OFFICER DOWNE takes you into a hyper-real Los Angeles for the story of a savage LA policeman who is repeatedly resurrected and returned to active duty via dark science technology. When a rookie officer named GABLE is recruited as back up, he discovers there’s much more to the titular super-cop (Kim Coates, “Sons of Anarchy”) than a mindless law enforcement drone warring against a twisted rouges gallery of over-the-top super-villains.

The movie follows this good guy cop who is put on ice until the technology comes along that is able to bring him back to life so he can hit the streets once again to uphold the law. There’s something special about this eerie resurrection because if he gets taken out he can come back over and over again. I really like the story and the movie itself is absolutely crazy in such a fun way. Shawn Crahan did a really good job telling the story and bringing the insanity to life. Kim Coates did a fantastic job playing this tough as nails good guy cop who doesn’t say a whole lot but he’s a likable character through and through. This guy even nicknames all of his weapons and vehicles – that’s how cool he is. Coates is also complimented by a great supporting cast. To top all of this off are the impressive special effects. This movie is a freaking bloodbath with ample amounts of gore! It’s a nice combination of practical effects and CGI.

The packaging comes with a slipcover. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The Blu-ray disc also features matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, I had a blast watching Officer Downe and it’s as insane of a watch as I had hoped. Shawn Crahan had only directed shorts for his band up to this point so for Officer Downe to be his first full-length feature he pretty much nailed it. To me Officer Down is a combination of The Punisher, Judge Dredd, Robocop, and Maniac Cop all rolled into one awesome crime fighting machine. There’s even some old school Kung Fu Theater theatrics thrown in. He’s all about the badge and taking down the bad guys and girls any way possible. There’s some over-the-top characters for him to take down, too. What Crahan has done is deliver a living, breathing graphic novel and honestly it’s one of my new favorites. Even the music is cool. This brutal and extremely violent movie definitely isn’t for everybody but there’s a big enough (built in) audience for it and I’ll go as far to say it’ll be a cult classic one day – or maybe it already is! This insane new action-thriller is now available on Blu-ray and is a must watch. I freaking loved this movie and it comes highly recommended!
