Blu-ray Review: LEGEND OF THE NAGA PEARLS

LEGEND OF THE NAGA PEARLS was directed by Yang Lei from a screenplay by Cheung Tan and stars Darren Wang, Zhang Tian’ai, Simon Yam, Siu-Wong Fan, Sui He, Luxia Jiang and Xing Yu.

In a distant past in the booming city of Uranopolis, the Winged People, a race capable of flying, live and prosper. A losing battle against the humans, however, results in a gradual loss of their flying capabilities. Xuelie, a royal descendant of the Winged People, begins a search for the legendary Naga Pearls with the intent of using them to destroy the humans and avenge his family. When the Naga Pearls fall into, and quickly out of, the hands of a witty thief, a human prince, and a Winged detective, the motley crew must overcome their distrust of one another to prevent the destruction of all humanity.

The viewer learns about this ancient winged tribe in the beginning of the movie and how they once lived peacefully with the humans. Now, one of the descendants has returned to lay claim to these magical pearls but standing in his way are three unlikely heroes who have to find a way to work together so they can save the human race from this sinister threat. The trio goes up against all kinds of deadly obstacles along the way but they move forward with their mission. During their journey, these three form a special bond and friendship in their quest to stop this attack. In the end, they do stop this evil monster from his plan of wiping out the human race and together they ultimately save the day.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The Blu-ray disc also features its own individual artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Legend of the Naga Pearls was a really exciting movie full of all kinds of amazing feats. The story was interesting and these characters were all fun to follow. This fantasy world that has been brought to life is full of imagination and breathtaking visuals. All of the locations were amazing and the sets were grand. There’s also some impressive high-flying wire work and well choreographed fights, so needless to say, the movie is packed full of action scenes from beginning to end. There’s some special effects (practical and visual) to go along with all of this that helps bring everything to life on screen. This is the most impressive and ambitious asian fantasy adventure I’ve seen in a long time and it’s a movie that I’ll be revisiting again real soon – because it’s just that good. Legend of the Naga Pearls will be available on Blu-ray on January 30th and is definitely worth checking out.
