Blu-ray Review: LEGEND OF THE DEMON CAT

LEGEND OF THE DEMON CAT was directed by Kaige Chen and stars Xuan Huang, Shôta Sometani, Yuqi Zhang and Hao Qin. In the visually lush Xianxia fantasy LEGEND OF THE DEMON CAT, a cat possesses a General’s wife, leaving a series of clues that a Poet and Monk follow in order the solve the mysterious death of famous Concubine.

Havoc descends upon the Imperial Court of the Tang Dynasty when the General’s wife is possessed by an ancient demon.  Through a series of unexpected twists and turns, the unlikely duo of an eccentric poet and dutiful monk, unravel the dark and ancient mystery behind a centuries-old death of a beautiful courtesan in hopes it holds the key to saving the general’s wife.

The story for Legend of the Demon Cat follows a young monk who is sent to perform an exorcism on a possessed Emperor, but before he gets a chance, the Emperor dies. The monk teams up with a poet and the two embark on a journey to unravel this murder mystery that has a black cat at the center of it. This isn’t just any ordinary black cat because this creature has supernatural powers and it has a heartbreaking secret it needs to share.

The two men also find out that a general’s wife has been possessed by this demonic cat, and as they continue to investigate this supernatural case, they discover it goes back to the past and deals with much more than what’s taking place in the present. The case also involves a murder that took place years earlier and it’s all connected to what’s happening as the demon cat serves as the host of this haunting tale.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The Blu-ray disc also features some similar artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Legend of the Demon Cat ended up being a beautifully shot supernatural fantasy that’s a mixture of ghost story and murder mystery all woven into one astonishing watch. This mysterious demon cat is at the center of the story that’s full of twists and turns as the viewer follows this unlikely duo that looks for clues to solve this mystery and ultimately save a young woman’s life. The haunting story is extremely interesting and so are these characters. It’s all complimented by some amazing special effects and stunt work. The visuals in this supernatural fantasy are breathtaking. Legend of the Demon Cat is a long movie but it’s a fast-paced watch so thankfully it never stalls. All in all, I can see why this movie has won so many awards because it’s an impressive work of art and a masterful slice of cinema. Legend of the Demon Cat will be available on Blu-ray on October 22nd.
