Blu-ray Review: KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM

knights of badassdom

KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM is directed by Joe Lynch and stars Peter DinklageSteve ZahnRyan KwantenSummer Glau, Danny PudiMaragrita Levieva and Jimmi Simpson.

The movie centers around three friends who are LARPers (Live Action Role Players) and they take this hobby very serious! Two of the friends take their buddy off to LARP with them to help try and cheer him up after a bad breakup. Once they arrive in the woods, it is a total D&D LARPing extravaganza in the nerdiest and geekiest kind of ways and then something happens, one of them accidentally conjures up a blood-lusting Succubus from the pits of hell that looks a lot like the ex girlfriend, well in the beginning any way.

Fantasy collides with reality on the Fields of Evermore once this all-out epic battle of make-believe wizards, demons and assorted mythical creatures attempt to vanquish the evil demon they accidentally summoned.  Once this demon arrives, she has some gory fun with some of the costumed warriors, from gutting them with her fist, to slicing and dicing body parts, to seducing others and leading them to their untimely deaths. As the numbers of LARPers grow fewer and fewer as the movie plays out, it’s up to the friends to do battle with the Succubus and send it back to hell. The epic battle at the end is Head Bangers Ball meets LARPing Gone Wild! The ending was so much fun, it’s one of those endings that makes you want more, especially one super surprising scene from Peter Dinklage! You’ll just have to watch and see for yourself.

Okay, now this was a fun movie! I’m not too familiar with the whole LARP craze but I know the people take it seriously and watching these characters do all of this on screen was crazy, in a good way. You get to watch how serious these people are when they get into character and stay there no matter what, even if a Succubus shows up.  They stay in character even after the evil Succubus arrives and some of them even try to do battle with the beast using their fake weapons made of foam and other super soft material which can cause absolutely no damage. I thought the story was lots of fun, all of the main characters (our heroes) and even some of the supporting ones were interesting and fun to watch plus the demon was crazy fantastic, practical effects and all! I thought Joe Lynch did a great job with the movie and honestly I only have one complaint, it needed more Summer Glau!

Bottom line is, I had a blast with Knights of Badassdom but some people out there might not get the movie and its kind of humor. If you’re a fan of Joe Lynch like I am and you see the impressive cast in the movie, this alone should draw you in but there’s so much more! The movie includes some sick and twisted humor as well as some fantastic special effects with plenty of blood and gore plus some old school creature effects! If you like movies like Ghostbusters, The Goonies, Gremlins and Harry Potter, this movie is for you. The Blu-ray releases on April 1st so prepare thyself for a helluva fun time with the fantasy comedy.
