Blu-ray Review: KEANU

Keanu 3D

KEANU was directed by Peter Atencio and stars Keegan-Michael Key as Clarence and Jordan Peele as Rell. The film also stars Method Man as the menacing gang leader, Cheddar; Tiffany Haddish as the stone-cold gangster, Hi-C; with Luis Guzmán as the Mexican cartel kingpin, Bacon; Nia Long as Clarence’s beautiful wife, Hannah; and Will Forte as the eccentric drug dealer, Hulka.

To save what you love, you must become what you fear. This action-comedy follows Rell (Jordan Peele), a pothead slacker who has recently been dumped by his girlfriend. Rell gives up on women and sort of adapts a cute kitten that shows up at his house. There’s also Rell’s cousin Clarence (Keegan-Michael Key), a family man who doesn’t lead much of an exciting life but when Keanu gets catnapped, the two men’s lives go from one extreme to the other. Rell enlists his trusty cousin Clarence to help him track down Keanu and their road takes them into some dangerous new territory where they meet some dangerous new characters.

The two meet Hulka (Will Forte ) during their journey and even though he’s not much help, they do get pointed in the right direction. This leads them to Cheddar (Method Man), a drug dealing thug that catnapped Keanu who ultimately agrees to give the little kitty back to Rell if they’ll do a job for him. Rell and Clarence (along with their fake gangsta attitudes) reluctantly agree and get in even deeper over their heads than they were to begin with – all over a kitten. This leads them to the home of a Mexican cartel kingpin that leads to a full blown bullet firing bonanza – and once again this is all over a kitten. In the end, Rell gets Keanu back but he and his cousin have gotten in so much trouble that they have to serve a little time.

The story for Keanu was silly to the extreme and the movie itself felt like an extended sketch from “Key & Peele.” The two comedians not only play Rell and Clarence but they also portray a couple of menacing characters called Smoke and Oil and I think these two creations had been on their show before. Maybe? There’s a lot of gags that keep the movie going as well as a few surprise cameos that I’ll keep on the downlow so I don’t ruin it for you. Trust me, they are gold! The movie is also action-packed with lots of gunfire and bullets flying around. There’s also some nudity and drug use so watch out if this kind of stuff bothers you. As great as the cast is, it’s the little kitten that kind of steals the show. Peter Atencio did a really good job capturing some hilarious moments with the little furball.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The Blu-ray disc features the movie logo with no artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Keanu was a fun watch but it felt like an extended sketch with lots of filler time from the comedy duo’s show. Don’t get me wrong because the movie is hysterical at times but other times it really stalls. Also, not everyone is a fan of this kind of humor so unfortunately this movie isn’t going to be for some folks out there. The movie is loaded with gags and even music by 80’s pop star George Michael that’s hilarious in its own right. Sorry but George Michael music doesn’t really fit in with gangsta style and that’s what makes it so funny. I’m a fan of Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele and the two continue to make a great comedic team. Sure, the movie has its flaws but it’s still a fun watch and these two get to show off some. This Blu-ray releases on August 2nd and is worth a watch.
