Blu-ray Review: I KILL GIANTS

I KILL GIANTS is based on the acclaimed Man of Action graphic novel by Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura with a screenplay by Joe Kelly, the film was directed by Anders Walter, the Academy Award winning writer/director for the short Helium, and stars Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy franchise), Imogen Poots (Need for Speed, That Awkward Moment), and Madison Wolfe (The Conjuring 2).

I Kill Giants tells the story of Barbara Thorson (Madison Wolfe), a teenage girl who chooses to escape the realities of school and a drab family life by retreating into her magical world of Titans and Giants. With the help of her new friend Sophia (Sydney Wade) and her school therapist (Zoe Saldana), Barbara will learn to battle her Giants and face her fears – tackling the mean bullies at school, her sister (Imogen Poots) and her difficult home life and eventually her biggest dread of the unknown.

Barbara is a character that so many people out there are going to be able to relate to because she’s an outcast at her school, she’s tormented by a bully, and on top of that she’s dealing with some serious issues at home with her family. You never really know what kind of struggles another person is dealing with and this movie is a prime example of how a kid might deal with it all. Her story starts out light-hearted and introduces her as this strong warrior who is secretly battling these giants that nobody else can see but her. Madison Wolfe shines as this troubled young teenager who is simply trying to find a way to deal with her problems so she makes up this entire new world.

As Barbara’s story slowly plays out and hints are teased about her private world, her vulnerability is revealed and this is where it all gets extremely emotional. The young girl’s reality has been turned upside down and she’s simply dealing with too much drama in her life so she makes up this new one that’s full of giants and titans and it puts her in the center as the hero who knows how to defeat them. In the end, she finds the strength to confront the real life horrors she’s been running from and once she does it allows her to close the door on the fantasy land that she created.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The Blu-ray disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, even though I wasn’t very familiar with the graphic novel I Kill Giants, I’ve read enough about the movie to know that it stays close enough to its source material. I really liked the story about this young girl who shuts out the real world and makes up this epic fantasy land because it’s just too much for her to deal with at that time. She gets some help from her school therapist and a new friend that ultimately allows her to confront these real world problems that she’s been running from that also allows her to finally close the door on this fantasy land that she created. I thought the performances in the movie were very strong and the director was able to capture the emotional strengths that the movie possesses. I Kill Giants is a well executed coming-of-age fantasy drama that’ll pull on those old heart strings as it plays out. Grab some tissues when you watch this one. I Kill Giants will be available on Blu-ray on May 22nd.
