Blu-ray Review: HOWLING II

howling 2 blu 3d

Howling II: Your Sister Is A Werewolf was directed by Philippe Mora and stars Christopher Lee, Sybil Danning, Reb Brown, Annie McEnroe and Marsha A. Hunt.

After newscaster Karen White’s shocking on-screen transformation and violent death in The Howling, her brother Ben (Brown) is approached by Stefan Crosscoe (Lee), a mysterious man who claims that Karen has, in fact, become a werewolf. But this is the least of their worries… to save mankind, Stefan, Ben and his girlfriend Jenny (McEnroe) travel to Transylvania to battle and destroy Stirba (Danning), the immortal queen of all werewolves, before she is restored to her full powers. After countless millennia of watching, waiting and stalking, the unholy creatures known as werewolves are poised to inherit the earth with Stirba as their queen. The trio of heroes ultimately meet up and battle it out with the queen werewolf and her hairy minions in a not-so epic finale.

Okay, as good as The Howling was you’d think it would have spawned some really good sequels but every single movie that followed the horror classic was a stinker for some reason. Howling II is as bad as they come but it’s one of those movies that’s so bad you can’t stop watching. It’s like a bad trainwreck – you can’t help but watch it until it’s over! As bad as the story was for this bizarre movie and how everything played out on screen, there was some good to it. The setting and location was really good and gave the movie this dark vibe. There’s also the talented cast lead by the legendary Christopher Lee who portrayed this sort of Van Helsing type of character but in this case he’s after werewolves instead of vampires. Sybil Danning gave the movie plenty of sex appeal which was also an added plus. She sported some pretty cool looking leather costumes plus she looked pretty good even covered in fur.

I thought most of the special effects and props used looked pretty good but there just wasn’t enough to keep the movie exciting. Howling II needed more elements of horror since it was supposed to be a horror sequel and it just came up short in this department. I will add there were some unnecessary supernatural elements thrown in that I really didn’t like. Another weird part of the movie was the annoying techno pop soundtrack that ended up getting on my nerves. Who picked out this music?

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images and the impressive list of extras. The reverse sleeve includes some alternate artwork along with the movie credits. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition upgrade were crisp and clear.

Bottom line is, The Howling II: My Sister is a Werewolf is on record as being on of the worst horror movies ever made but it’s also one of those movies that’s so bad it’s good. This horror wannabe is like a techno pop werewolf erotica supernatural experiment gone wrong. Anyway, it was still a cheesy fun treat revisiting this old romp from 1985 and I thought Scream Factory did a great job with the high-def upgrade and all of the extras. This Blu-ray releases on July 14th but be warned, it’s a stinker, but it’s a stinker that looks really good in high-def.
