Blu-ray Review: HOAX

HOAX was directed by Matt Allen, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Park and stars Adrienne BarbeauBrian ThompsonBen BrowderCheryl TexieraShoshana BushHutch DanoMatt ReidyAnthony Ray ParkerChristopher Soren Kelly, Ryan LeeMax DeckerBrian Landis FolkinsKaren Slack and Shawn Rickel.

An investigative team travels deep into the remote Colorado wilderness  after a group of young campers are viciously murdered by what may be  Bigfoot. While the highly specialized crew  searches for evidence, they find themselves in a fight for survival  against the legendary beast. What they encounter turns out to be more  unexpected and dangerous than anything they could have ever imagined.

The story centers around Rick Paxton (Ben Browder), a desperate reality show host who guarantees his producer that he can prove that Bigfoot is real. Rick assembles a small team that includes Dr. Ellen Freese (Cheryl Texiera), John Singer (Brian Thompson), Justin Johnson (Hutch Dano), Bridgette Powers (Shoshana Bush), and a few others to help him with his search for the elusive creature. This team has everything it needs, from high tech equipment, a tracker, an expert in the field and even an annoying reporter to document it all. So what could go wrong?

Upon arrival, it doesn’t take long for things to get “hairy” for Rick, Ellen and the others when one of them goes missing. They begin searching the isolated area for any kind of markings or proof that Bigfoot exists and for their missing friend. Amost forgot about him! There are noises, markings and even shadowy sightings from a distance that can’t be explained, but with each step they take, the team gets closer to finding out the terrifying truth. The body count rises because whatever it is in the woods is tracking down members of the team and viciously killing them off one by one until all is finally revealed.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, an image and list of special features. The reverse sleeve features some alternate artwork and movie credits so you have your pick of which side you’d like to use as the front cover. The Blu-ray disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, we get plenty of Bigfoot movies and I have to admit that Hoax ended up being one of the better ones to come along in a while even though it has a few flaws. Bigfoot movies can be hit or miss (mostly miss) and this one was pretty darn entertaining. My only gripe was the… Anyway, what I liked most about Hoax was the interesting plot and the great cast assembled for this horror-thriller. The story is full of suspense because you don’t really know if what’s going on and if it’s actually real or a Hoax plus there’s an awesome twist added into the mix towards the end. That twist also sells the movie for me! The isolated location was also spot on for a movie like this plus I thought it featured some impressive cinematography. It’s dark and atmospheric but there’s also a little humor. Getting back to the cast, it’s always great to see Ben Browder (Farscape and Stargate SG-1) show up in something new and he’s always fun to watch. The guy also has a great sense of humor and is an awesome interview! As far as the blood and gore go, get ready because Hoax delivers. All in all, I think Matt Allen did a really good job with his feature film directorial debut and it’s definitely a movie I plan on revisiting soon because it’s a lot of fun. Hoax will be available on Blu-ray on August 20th.
