Blu-ray Review: HELLIONS

hellions blu 2

HELLIONS was directed by Bruce McDonald, from a screenplay by Pascal Trottier, and stars Chloe Rose, Rossif Sutherland, Rachel Wilson, Peter DaCunha, Luke Bilyk and Robert Patrick. Music by Todor Kobakov and Ian LeFeuvre.

This haunting holiday yarn follows seventeen-year-old Dora (Chloe Rose), who ends up staying home on Halloween and the night turns into a terrifying fight for survival when a group of trick-or-treaters from Hell show up at her doorstep. The reason Dora wants to stay at home alone is that she gets some surprising news that she’s pregnant and it has left her in a bit of a funk trying to decide what her next step will be. At home all alone, Dora’s night gets twisted and turned upside down, making this horrifying Halloween night one that she’ll never forget.

At first Dora just finds these kids annoying and plays it all off as your basic trick-or-treaters who are taking things a little too far and having some fun, but they just keep coming back again and again and again and this begins to creep Dora out big time. With each knock and passing by, these unwelcome spooks take one step closer in revealing themselves and their true motives which is getting their hands on the ultimate treat and Dora is the key to it. The pregnant teenager finds out that these pint-sized demons are after one thing – her unborn baby.

Okay, we’ve gotten all kinds of Halloween creepers over the years but very few have stood the test of time and ended up being horror classics. Way back in 1978 we got John Carpenter‘s Halloween and more recently in 2009 we got Michael Dougherty‘s Trick r’ Treat and now in 2015 Bruce McDonald has delivered what I consider to be an instant Halloween classic that fits right in with these others. Hellions is the newest Halloween classic to come along in quite a while and it’s a movie that I’ll be watching around Halloween time for now on. I’m adding it to my must watch list!

Okay, the story for Hellions was a lot of fun from its eerie beginning to the creepy finale and of course it had a few twists thrown in. The small cast was great and they all did a fantastic job with their characters. Chloe Rose stole the show with her character Dora who goes up against these evil little monsters from Hell. This whole ordeal she goes through with these unwelcome trick-or-treaters also helps her work through the surprising news of her pregnancy – well sort of. Rose plays this strong female lead who ultimately fights back against these demonic minions who are after her unborn baby.

Bruce McDonald did a great job telling this story and bringing it to life on screen and everything was captured here to make this movie something dark and special. The way this movie was shot is simply beautiful in such a dark, haunting and atmospheric way. Kudos on the beautiful cinematography! You’ll just have to watch it to see what I’m talking about. The rural setting and location also helped with the story. There were also some neat special effects thrown in that helped give Hellions its full-blown horror element. There’s also the super creepy look these little trick-or-treaters had going on. Oh yeah, you’ll remember these little boils and ghouls after watching this movie!

The packaging comes with a slipcover. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details and a few images. The reverse sleeve features some alternate artwork and movie credits. The Blu-ray disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear.

Bottom line is, Hellions was a lot of creepy fantastic fun and as far as I’m concerned, it’s definitely a new Halloween classic that horror fans will enjoy for years to come. I know I will! The movie really does fit right in with scary holiday classics like Halloween and Trick r’ Treat. Go pop some popcorn, then grab some friends and hold on tight, and get ready for some thrills and chills and things that go bump in the night – or in this case knock on your door and break through the windows. I had an absolute blast watching Hellions so be sure you check out this Blu-ray when it releases on February 2nd. Hellions comes highly recommended!
