Blu-ray Review: HATCHET III

hatchet 3 lu

A search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces as Marybeth learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades.

HATCHET III is directed by BJ McDonnell, written and produced by Adam Green and stars Danielle Harris, Kane Hodder, Zach Galligan, Caroline Williams, Derek Mears with lots of surprise cameos!

The movie pics up right where the second one left off with Marybeth (Danielle Harris) taking Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder) to school, meaning she pretty much punches her fist through what’s left of his face, he falls back on a giant running chainsaw that cuts his body in half, then Matybeth takes his bloody scalp to the local sheriff’s office where she tells her story and is treated like a complete criminal.

A certain local journalist (Caroline Williams) who is also the sheriff’s ex-wife believes Marybeth and knows way too much about Victor Crowley and his story herself. She explains that Crowley in fact isn’t dead because he’s a ghost and a repeater which means he returns every night just the way he was killed. While these two talk the sheriff and a first response team head out to only find exactly what Marybeth said she left there, dead bodies everywhere.  The coroner who is getting ready to work on what’s left of Crowley’s body gets a hug surprise because this repeater thing happens and Crowley comes back all new and shiny, but he’s still ugly as crap! As soon as Crowley is back for another night of bloody fun he quickly learns that he has a new batch of bodies to dismember and quickly takes care of business in the fashion that we’ve all come to love about these Hatchet movies. Crazy, over-the-top gory kills that leaves his victims armless, headless, split in to, skulls and spines pulls out through their stomachs and even faces being grind off with that darn heavy duty sander we all have come to love!

So, we get back to Marybeth, the journalist and the poor deputy who set out to go and end this nightmare once and for all but they have to make a pit stop along with way to pick up Thomas Crowley who is now ashes in an urn. The house they stop at is the home of a distant relative of Crowley’s and is as bat shit crazy as they come, plus it’s another awesome cameo from a fan favorite!  This leads to the final deadly showdown with these three and Victor Crowley who is waiting on them or anybody else to show up so he can kill them too!  I loved everything about this epic finale that involves more blood, more decapitation, the ashes and Marybeth versus Victor Crowley and one last round!

Hatchet III‘s story is pretty simple but fun. It’s the bloody and gory kill scenes that have made this franchise popular and successful and Adam Green and his team know that and delivered in the third entry. They didn’t hold back at all with these imaginative kills and fun practical FX. Some are so crazy I caught myself smiling at times! Another huge thing that fans have come to expect from the Hatchet movies are the cameos and I was worried that they had killed off everybody in the first two but we do get to see some familiar faces and it’s enough to satisfy the fan’s craving. I’ll also have to admit that as huge of a fan as I am of Danielle Harris, I think Caroline Williams stole the show here! She brings it and she is relentless in doing so!  There’s also a gimmick cameo in the movie that has now appeared in all three movies but it’s a different character in each movie and I got a kick out of this!  I also want to give a huge shout out to Michael Papajohn and Jason Trost!

Bottom line is, Hatchet III to me is probably the best out of the three films. BJ McDonell did an amazing job with this being his first directing venture but he had so much to work with, from the amazing acting talent, to Green’s imaginative storytelling, to the freaking fun kill scenes that the movie offers and that the Hatchet Army have all come to expect. There are more gun shots fired in Hatchet III than both Expendables films put together and as many creative kills than what we saw in the first two! Holy shit this was a fun movie and I honestly can’t wait to watch it again! Be sure you check this one out, this movie is a horror fan’s wet dream and is available now on Blu-ray.
