Blu-ray Review: GRIDLOCKED

GRIDLOCKED was directed by Allan Ungar and stars Dominic Purcell, Cody Hackman, Trish Stratus, Vinnie Jones, Steve Byers, Richard Gunn and Saul Rubinek with Stephen Lang and Danny Glover.

The movie follows David Hendrix (Dominic Purcell), a former S.W.A.T leader who gets paired up with Brody Walker (Cody Hackman), an arrogant bad boy movie star who is sentenced on a mandatory ride along as a requirement for his probation. The two arrive at an old precinct that has been turned into a training facility where they meet up with Hendrix’s former team. Following their arrival, a team of mercenaries arrive with plans to seize the compound and retract something extremely valuable inside the building. The two factions enter into an explosive old fashioned gun fight between good guy and bad guy with a few shocking twists and revelations introduced along the way.

Okay, I’m a big fan of those awesome action movies from the 80’s and Gridlocked definitely reminded me of those kind of movies. The story was a lot of fun and interesting plus there’s a few twists thrown in that you don’t see coming. I’m not going to tell you what but there’s more going on here than just a simple heist. You can tell this was a low budget indie production due to the fact that the entire movie pretty much takes place inside this facility. Trust me when I say all resources were used to make this one exciting action-thriller that plays like Hollyweird’s big budget offerings.

All of the acting was great courtesy of this impressive cast assembled for the movie lead by Dominic Purcell who is a badass anyway. Hey, we also get Trish Stratus from the WWE so wrestling fans should enjoy this. There’s also Stephen Lang who always makes a great villain and he doesn’t disappoint here. Director Allan Ungar did a fantastic job telling this story and bringing it all to life on screen. He did a great job capturing all of the high-octane action scenes to the chemistry between some of the main characters. Speaking of action scenes, there’s plenty of well choreographed knock down drag outs packed with brutal force and unforgiving testosterone. Oh and if you want some blood you’re going to get some of that too!

The packaging comes with a slipcover. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The Blu-ray disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues at all with the video and audio for this release.

Bottom line is, Gridlocked ended up being a really cool action-thriller that easily surpassed my expectations. Fans of old school 80’s action movies from the Sly and Arnie days will hopefully enjoy this and appreciate it as much as I did. The movie truly does pay homage to action classics like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon. The story was intense and the characters were all interesting and fun to follow. This is also one of those action movies that the bullet count gets extremely high so see if you can keep count. Maybe you can make a drinking game out of it! Maybe? Gridlocked is this intense action-thriller that’s loaded with high-octane action scenes and surprising twists that’ll keep the viewers on the edge of their seats until the final act.  The movie arrives on Blu-ray on June 14th and is worth checking out.
