Blu-ray Review: FIRST KILL

FIRST KILL was directed by Steven C. Miller from a screenplay by Nick Gordon and stars Hayden Christensen, Bruce Willis, Ty Shelton, Megan Leonard and Gethin Anthony.

After witnessing the botched murder attempt of a bank robber by his crew during a father-son hunting trip, Will (Hayden Christensen) ends up entangled in a web that forces him to evade the police and recover the stolen heist money to save his son. In an attempt to reconnect with his son Danny (Ty Shelton), successful Wall Street broker Will (Hayden Christensen) takes his family on a vacation to the cabin where Will grew up. While Will and Danny are hunting, their trip takes a deadly turn when they witness the murder of a crooked police officer as a bank robbery goes awry. When Danny is taken hostage by the criminals, Will is forced to help them evade the police chief (Bruce Willis) investigating the murder and recover the stolen money in exchange for his son’s life.

Will tries to connect with his son Danny who’s been getting bullied at school so he decides to take his wife and son to a remote family cabin close to where he grew up. Once they arrive, they bump into the local police chief who tells them there’s been a bank robbery and criminals are still on the loose. Once they get settled in, Will takes Danny hunting and they accidentally witness a murder and it happens to be a couple of the men connected to the bank heist. Danny ends up getting taken hostage by one of the men and Will takes it upon himself to do whatever it takes to get his son back.

What happens is, Will gets involved way too deep with the situation where he’s tasked at recovering the stolen loot and discovers that there’s much more to this small town bank heist and nobody can be trusted. He does whatever it takes to finally retreive his son and gets a little sweet ass revenge while doing so. Will had good intentions by taking his wife and son to the old family cabin for what was supposed to be a fun vacation but it ended up being a traumatizing experience for the three of them. Danny was already getting bullied at school and now he’s gone through something like this but he handled the situation well and probably won’t be getting bullied anymore after this.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, an image and list of special features. The Blu-ray disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, First Kill ended up being an intense watch that’s one part action-heist and one part coming-of-age drama with a touch of survival-thriller thrown in. The story was interesting and all of the acting was great. It’s always interesting to see how younger actors do in movies like this that features dangerous and traumatizing scenes and Ty Shelton did such a good job with his performance. There’s also Hayden Christensen and Bruce Willis whose names alone will draw in plenty of interest for this movie. First Kill also includes some action scenes and lots of gun fire. It’s a cool shoot ’em up kinda movie but it’s also about family and relationships. Steven C. Miller once again shows why he’s one of the best filmmakers out there today and has delivered yet another exciting movie that’s complimented by an interesting story and a great cast. First Kill releases on Blu-ray (plus Digital HD) on September 5th and is worth checking out.
