Blu-ray Review: Fear The Walking Dead: The Complete Third Season

Fear the Walking Dead  is executive produced by showrunner Dave Erickson, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero and David Alpert. The series stars Kim Dickens as Madison,  Cliff Curtis as Travis,  Frank Dillane as Nick, Alycia Debnam-Carey as Alicia, Rubén Blades as Daniel, Mercedes Mason as Ofelia and Colman Domingo as Strand. Joining the cast as series regulars for season three are Dayton Callie, Daniel Sharman and Sam Underwood, who will play the Otto family, founders of a survivalist organization who prepared for the fall of democracy, but didn’t anticipate the rise of the dead, as well as Lisandra Tena as Lola Guerrero.

When Fear the Walking Dead” returns for Season 3, our families are brought together in the vibrant and violent ecotone of the U.S.-Mexico border. With international lines done away with following the world’s end, our characters must attempt to rebuild not only society, but their families as well. As society collapses around them, the families must come together to survive the apocalypse and combat the deadly threats on all sides.

The third season finds Travis, Madison, Nick and Alycia arriving at a rural compound run by Jeremiah (Dayton Callie) and his two sons, Jake (Sam Underwood) and Troy (Daniel Sharman), who welcome them in under strict rules they have to follow. It doesn’t take long for things to go south for them because there’s another faction in the picture and the two groups don’t get along at all and on top of this there’s the walkers surrounding the area. There’s also Victor who is still separated from the group and he’s hooked up with even more bad hombres where he ends up bumping into Daniel who is alive and well and extremely angry. Daniel and Victor do not like each other at all so this meeting is an uncomfortable one between the two men. Daniel also finds out that Ofelia is still alive but his plans of reuniting with his daughter doesn’t go like he wants it to.

He who controls the water has the power.” What happens is, all of these groups are running low on water the entire season and there’s one more sinister faction that’s held up at the local dam and will not let others have any of the water. Madison and the gang go up against these people and there’s a plan that’s put in motion to blow up the dam and Nick is in possession of the detonator. He’s always been the unstable loose canon of the bunch so there’s no better person to blow things up than Nick who has sort of become the accidental hero of the series. In the final moments he does just that – he blows up the dam and releases the water for the people in need. As great as this sounds, not everyone makes it out alive this season because there’s always going to be casualties of war and in this dangerous new world order nobody is safe. Of course, we get left with a cliffhanger so we’ll have to wait and see who actually made it out alive.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes season three details, some images and list of special features. Each Blu-ray disc includes artwork that features the main characters from the series. Inserting each disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio. There’s also AMC promo inserts inside the packaging.

Bottom line is, I enjoyed revisiting the third season of Fear the Walking Dead that not only offered more episodes but it took things to the next level for this group of survivors. This dangerous world is always expanding for these people who continue to encounter other groups who are either friendly or are as deadly as the ever growing number of walkers. The driving force for Fear TWD is definitely the smart writing and these interesting characters that I’ve slowly become invested in. Things have gotten a lot bigger and much deadlier for all of them with each season and sadly not all of them survive as they move forward in their search for a safe new place to call home. This is a violent series that showcases a fair amount of blood and gore along with some terrifying walkers and it all looks creepy cool on screen. Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete Third Season will be available on Blu-ray (plus Digital HD) on March 13th and is worth checking out.
