Blu-ray Review: DEAD SHADOWS

dead shadows 3d

DEAD SHADOWS was directed by David Cholewa and stars Fabian Wolfrom, Blandine Marmigere, Rurik Salle, Gilles Barret, Laurie Cholewa, Margaux Devy and John Fallon.

The movie centers around Chris, whose parents were brutally killed 11 years ago, on the same day that the Halley’s comet could be seen from earth. Now a new comet has appeared and along with it comes change and not the good kind of change! We watch all of these people party like it’s the end of days and strange things begin to happen all around. People begin to act funny, some begin to get really violent  and some begin to change and I’m talking mutate unto some crazy H.P. Lovecraft type creatures too!

Chris, armed with a pair of baseball bats, teams up with his gun-toting tough guy neighbor John as they begin to go up against every crazy mutant in the city. The two come across some wildly changed people during their journey across the deadly streets of the city but there’s one that really stood out to me and that was the “spider lady” Chris has a moment with in the tunnel. This is a super eerie scene that is one of the best in cinematic history, as far as movies like this go! As the movie unfolds, Chris meets up with a few new friends, along with a small group of soldiers and as they attempt to escape this disaster zone. As the deadly night comes to an end, we see that everything (and everyone) has now changed forever, including the hero Chris.

So, have you ever dived straight into a movie thinking you’ll like it but you come out digging it even more than you thought you would? Dead Shadows is that movie for me and I absolutely loved this flick! The story is a lot of fun, a little slow at the beginning but once it gets going, it’s nonstop mutated action. Watching the little guy Chris take on this whole “new world order” of chaos just makes you cheer for the guy to keep chugging along and even at times it looked like he was done for, he just kept on fighting. Hey, the good guy always wins, right? Cholewa’s vision for this movie was simply fantastic and he delivered a whole new kind of creature feature for a new generation. You can easily see his influences here and to me the movie felt like a sequel to the cult classic Night of the Comet with some Lovecraft thrown in for added flavor. Dead Shadows takes it a step further though and this comet doesn’t bring us just zombies but things much worse, the kind of things from your worse nightmares. I think this was Cholewa’s first movie and it plays like he’s been doing this for years! The special effects in the movie is just something to gaze upon with excitement and astonishment. I know there’s plenty of you fans who don’t like CGI, but there’s just enough in this movie, it’s all done just right and it looks so good in this moody post-apocalyptic setting. Don’t get me wrong, there’s some cool practical effects as well along with some blood and gore, enough to satisfy your thirst!

The packaging comes with a slipcover featuring the artwork you see up top. The back includes movie details, some images and list of extras. The disc features the trademark animated menu that Scream Factory is now known for and it’s easy to navigate. The video and audio on this Blu-ray are both crisp and clear and makes the movie even more of an enjoyable experience.

Bottom line is, Dead Shadows is the best movie of its kind I’ve seen in a long, long time! This sci-fi thriller is a mixture of Lovecraft, Godzilla, Night of the Comet blended with a doomsday/apocalyptic element. This Blu-ray releases on April 29th and is definitely one you’ll want to check out. An instant cult classic!
