Blu-ray Review: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: The Complete Third Season

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow stars Victor Garber, Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz, Franz Drameh, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Tala Ashe and Keiynan Lonsdale, with Nick Zano and Dominic Purcell. Based on the DC characters, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg BerlantiMarc Guggenheim, Phil Klemmer and Sarah Schechter.

The future is bright. After defeating the Legion of Doom, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow face a new threat created by their actions. By revisiting a moment in time that they had already participated in, they’ve essentially fractured the timeline and created anachronisms all across time! In Season Three, the Legends must find a way to return all the anachronisms to their original timelines before the time stream falls apart.

This season has the team dealing with the consequences of accidentally unleashes the likes of Ceaser, Napoleon, Helen of Troy and other characters from history. They’re also dealing with some changes (and drama) within the team ranks when a few members part ways and some new ones sign up. Zari Adrianna Tomaz (Tala Ashe), a Muslim-American superhero joins the team full-time this season. John Constantine (Matt Ryan) becomes a part-time member and comes in to help with a few headaches and I think he’ll get even more screen time in the fourth season. Kid Flash (Keiynan Lonsdale) shows up to help out on a few adventures but don’t get used to seeing him around because he’s out. Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallan) has a little screen time this season and gets a little too close to Sara when the two have a fling which also comes with a huge twist because there’s more to Ava than meets the eye.

The Legends also get in on the action in the epic “Crisis on Earth-X” crossover event where everybody shows up to take on some evil Nazis. Even thought Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) has been reduced to a background character, there’s still a lot of mystery about the former Time Master who put this team together. Gorilla Grodd makes his return in a few episodes to cause some mischief but the biggest threat of them all this season was the return of Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) and his daughter Eleanor (Courtney Ford) who’s dealing with a dark transformation as the season plays out. A supernatural entity known as Mallus ends up taking control her body so the Legends have to team up with Damien, some former team members and even Beebo to take on the evil force. This battle takes place in the past so that means Jonah Hex (Johnathon Schaech) makes another appearance and honestly I’d like to see more of this character in Legends of Tomorrow. We even get to see a refreshing different side of Damien Darhk this time around who ultimately takes one for the team in the end to help stop the rise of Mallus.

The packaging comes with a nice slipcase – the same kind all of the other home video release like this from WBHE come in. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes season three details, some images and list of special features. There’s also an insert inside that includes a list of the episodes with synopsis, original airdates, more images, and series credits. All three of the Blu-ray discs are blue and feature the series logo. Inserting each disc, the menu screens were simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: The Complete Third Season continues to be a fun and exciting time traveling series that’s full of action, comedy and cool special effects. The best thing I like about Legends of Tomorrow is its massive sense of humor and the fact that it never takes itself, anyone or anything too seriously. I still like the writing for the most part even though there are a few missteps here and there (let’s keep politics, religion and real world news out of it) but all series have their flaws and this one is no different. The cast continues to do a great job with their characters and there’s also more cameos this season from some familiar faces. We even get to see the return of Beebo (the cute and cuddly stuffed animal) that comes in to help the team save the day in the finale. I have to add that this fun sci-fi series hasn’t really lost a step since it first premiered a few years ago because there are no rules when it comes to this team of misfit superheroes. The crazier the stories get the more fun this series actually is! DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: The Complete Third Season is now available on a 3-disc Blu-ray set (plus Digital) and is worth a watch.
