Blu-ray Review: BEYOND THE REACH

beyond the reach

BEYOND THE REACH was directed by Jean-Baptiste Leonetti and based on the novel “Deathwatch” by Robb White. The film stars Michael Douglas, Jeremy Irvine, Ronny Cox and Hanna Mangan-Lawrence.

The movie follows a cocky businessman (Douglas) who spends his spare time big-game hunting. He ends up visiting a small town on the outskirts of the Mojave Desert where he hires a young deputy as a guide to take him deep into the hot desert in search of some prey to shoot for sport.

The two head out into the middle of the blazing desert and what happens is, the trigger happy businessman ends up shooting an old local man and kills him with the only witness being his hired guide. When the guide refuses to be drawn into the dishonest cover-up, a deadly game of cat-and-mouse ensues across the barren and brutal desert pitting hunter against prey.Things get deadly real fast for the young guide as he quickly becomes the new target and sees first hand how ruthless this shady businessman really is.

The two play cat and mouse all over the hot desert and the businessman even catches the young guide a few times but with each encounter the guide ends up escaping from the skilled hunter and learns a little more about him. As the movie plays out, the viewer discovers that the young guide has some skills as well and has a knack for survival as well as his knowledge for desert. These traits keep him alive while he’s hunted like an animal and allows him enough time to slowly turn things around. Ultimately, he outsmarts the businessman and calls in for help from the sheriff. They all end back up at the jail and just when you think it’s over, the businessman makes a surprising escape. This also sets up for one final encounter between the hunter and his prey that finally ends with a deadly bang.

Okay, I had checked out a few mixed reviews before I ever even watched Beyond the Reach and I must say that this was a very intense action-thriller. The story was great and both of these main characters were just so interesting. First of all, Jeremy Irvine has his American accent down to perfection play8ing this All-American young man with a conscience. His character is really interesting to watch once his survival instincts kick in as he’s being hunted down by this egotistical maniac. This young man proves throughout the movie that his will to live is definitely unmatched. Now we get to Michael Douglas who plays this arrogant rich businessman with no remorse for any kind of life at all. His character is the kind you just love to hate and he pulls it off with flying colors. Douglas really sells this vile character of his to near perfection. There’s plenty of action and suspense throughout the movie so there’s never really a dull moment. There’s also the extremely cool Mercedes 6-wheel SUV that Douglas drives. It’s like the ultimate SUV for the ultimate big-game hunter that costs close to half a million dollars.

The packaging comes with a slipcover. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images and list of extras. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were both crisp and clear.

Bottom line is, Beyond the Reach ended up being a really intense action-thriller that included this deadly game of cat and mouse where only the strongest survives – literally. There were some scenes in the movie that had me on the edge of my seat watching these two play this deadly game of survival. This Blu-ray releases on June 16th and is definitely worth checking out.
