Blu-ray Review: BENT

BENT is based on characters from the “Danny Gallagher” novels written by J.P. O’Donnell. The movie was written and directed by Bobby Moresco and stars Karl Urban, Andy Garcia, Sofia VergaraGrace Byers, John Finn, Trai Byers and Vincent Spano.

When a drug bust goes wrong, ex-cop Danny Gallagher’s (Karl Urban) quest for justice leads him to the car-bomb murder of a government official’s wife. As Gallagher learns the woman’s secret lover was a seductive federal agent (Sofia Vergara), he finds himself under fire. But from who — his own cops, a vengeful drug lord, the CIA, or someone even more ruthless?

The movie follows Danny Gallagher, an ex-cop who was framed for the murder of his partner during a drug bust that went wrong and it leaves him labeled as a “cop killer” by his former peers. When Danny gets out of prison years later he sets out to get revenge on the drug lord that set him up and he discovers that this crime is attached to another one. Danny gets a little help from his mentor Jimmy Murtha (Andy Garcia) who also has some ties to the unfortunate event that put the ex-cop in prison and he also meets Rebecca who also has connections to the person that Danny is going after. What happens is, Danny slowly moves in on his target and ultimately gets his revenge for what happened to him and his partner years earlier which also allows him to finally clear his name.

Bent means a police officer who is corrupt. The story for Bent treaded on familiar territory and followed this ex-cop who was framed for his partner’s murder that was set up by the drug lord they were trying to bust. The characters are easily the driving force of the movie and some of them come with a few twists and I’ll just leave that at that. There are some good performances and Karl Urban shows he can still deliver as the lead character in a movie just like he did in Dredd a few years ago, and even though the beautiful Sofia Vergara isn’t in the movie much, her character definitely makes an impact. Bent also features some intense action scenes that include some explosions, chases and gun fights that all look great on screen. All in all, I’d say Bent was a good movie but it unfortunately it didn’t offer up anything fresh.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, an image and list of special features. The Blu-ray disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Bent ended up being a noir crime-thriller that is a good watch but unfortunately it didn’t really offer up anything special or original. The story was okay but we’ve gotten so many movies like this over the years that it felt like I’d seen it before. The movie does have a great cast and Karl Urban delivers the goods as the lead character and Sofia Vergara shows she can do something besides the goofy stuff she’s known for in that popular sitcom on the small screen. I’m not saying that Bent is a bad watch because it’s not, it’s just a retread on lots of other crime-thrillers that have come along over the years. Bobby Moresco pulled double duty because he wrote the story and helmed the movie and I thought he captured some gritty and intense moments in the film as well as spotlight some of the good performances by this talented cast. Bent will be available on Blu-ray (plus Digital) on May 15th and is worth checking out.
