Blu-ray Review: Ash vs Evil Dead: Season 3

Ash vs Evil Dead stars Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams; Lucy Lawless as Ruby, Ray Santiago as Pablo Simon Bolivar, Dana DeLorenzo as Kelly Maxwell and newcomer Arielle Carver-O’Neill. The series is executive produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell, the original filmmakers of the franchise. Rob Tapert served as the new showrunner for the third season with Aaron Lam and Moira Grant on board as producers.

Ash vs Evil Dead: Season 3 features Ash, who – having gone from urban legend to hometown hero –discovers that he has a daughter. And, when Kelly witnesses a massacre with Ruby’s fingerprints all over it, she returns to warn Ash and Pablo.

The third and final season continues the adventures of Ash Williams, who has settled back into his home town of Elk Grove where he’s running his very own hardware/sex toy store and has now turned into the local hero instead of being the town zero for so many years. It doesn’t take long for that pesky Necronomicon to resurface and once again the Deadites show up and cause all kinds of bloody chaos. Ruby also makes her return and she’s back to her old evil ways and has her own sinister plan she wants to give birth to. What happens is, Ash ends up meeting his long lost daughter Brandy and even though she’s not a fan in the beginning, she warms up to her pops when she sees that he’s actually a hero instead of a deadbeat dad.

Kelly and Pablo are also back to help Ash in his battle against evil and both of them play a key part in the apocalyptic finale. They all meet their demise this season but thanks to Ash they’re also able to come back from the dead. While all of this is going on, Ruby is slowly making her move but once again her plans are stopped courtesy of the Dark Ones. The crazy thing is, that’s not the biggest threat this season because a giant Kandarian demon has made its way through the Gates of Hell and is destroying everything in its path. Judgement Day has finally arrived and Elk Grove evacuates so it’s up to Ash to battle it out against this demonic beast in a War of Armageddon. Of course, the season ends with a major cliffhanger even though it also allows the series to come to a satisfying end. P.S. Army of Darkness fans will get a kick out of it. Hail to the King baby!

The packaging for Ash vs Evil Dead: Season 3 comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes series details, a promo image and list of special features. Each Blu-ray disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, I had a blast revisiting Ash vs Evil Dead: Season 3 which also ended up being the final season for this fan favorite series and the last time we’ll see Ashley J. Williams played to perfection by the groovy legend, Bruce Campbell. A few changes went down between the first two season and this one because the showrunner made his exit and everything was scaled back just a bit for the third season. I couldn’t really tell that it had been scaled back at all because everything looked pretty epic, from the sets and designs, to the blood and gore, it was all crazy fun to the max as far as I’m concerned. There were also the incredible special effects, from makeup to visuals, and it all looked fantastic on screen. The writing was still spot on and there was still that trademark dark humor mixed with horror  that the Evil Dead franchise has always been notorious for. The cast did a great job with their characters and this season we got to know a little more about Ash’s family history. Ash vs Evil Dead: Season 3 is now available on a 2-disc Blu-ray set (plus Digital) and is defintiely worth checking out.
